{"id":9340,"date":"2024-06-11T16:59:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-11T21:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/?p=9340"},"modified":"2024-06-11T16:59:41","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T21:59:41","slug":"how-to-become-a-stem-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/blog\/how-to-become-a-stem-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Become a STEM Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past 25 years, more and more emphasis in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/degree\/?_degree_type=bachelors%2Cmasters%2Ceducation-specialist%2Cdoctorate%2Ccertificate-licensure-endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a> has <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been put<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on science, technology, engineering, and math. Better known as STEM, the importance of an education encompassing these components cannot <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be overstated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsta.org\/nstas-official-positions\/stem-education-teaching-and-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">U.S. Department of Commerce<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the employment rates in STEM occupations have grown faster in the past decade than in non-STEM occupations (24.4% versus 4.0%, respectively). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>If our students are to enter the workforce fully equipped to succeed, STEM must become a part of their general education. What exactly does a STEM teacher do? What are the skills and requirements for becoming a STEM teacher? Why would someone want to be a STEM teacher? And lastly, how can you become a STEM teacher today?<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What Does a STEM Teacher Do?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A STEM teacher has various roles that depend on their setting and age level of students they are serving. In elementary, a STEM teacher often <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">teaches a specialist class that students attend a few days a week. They provide a general overview, or little sample, of various science, technology, engineering and math lessons. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/degree\/?_degree_type=bachelors%2Cmasters%2Ceducation-specialist%2Cdoctorate%2Ccertificate-licensure-endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher education settings<\/a>, STEM classes may be scheduled more <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">constantly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The STEM teacher may also teach subjects related to chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering, and robotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>STEM classes and STEM teachers may differ in many ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/degree\/?_degree_type=bachelors%2Cmasters%2Ceducation-specialist%2Cdoctorate%2Ccertificate-licensure-endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Educators<\/a> may focus their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachhub.com\/teaching-strategies\/2021\/11\/developing-ethical-thinking-in-stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM<\/a> resources on facilitating problem-solving, spatial reasoning, <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">creative<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> thinking intertwined with their reading and math curriculum. As children enter middle and high school, they may participate in specialized topics that dive deeper into the physical sciences and technology development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Taking it even further, some children attend STEM-specific elementary schools. These schools place a greater focus on the application of science, technology, engineering, and math. In schools such as <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">these<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> you often find intentionally designed learning experiences in applied math, coding, engineering basics, lessons on movement and mechanics, or even robotics. Students learn and understand concepts and processes as each subject <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is combined<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with their STEM education. So, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">what<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is required for a teacher to teach STEM?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">STEM Teacher Requirements: Skills and Education<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In order to<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> become a STEM teacher, you need to obtain the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">same<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> requirements as all educators and often an additional STEM certification. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> means that you need a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bachelor\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> degree, you need to complete student teaching, and you need to pass the national teachers certification exam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some schools will recognize <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> these requirements as adequate, while <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">other schools, especially STEM-specific schools<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, will require a STEM <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nise.institute\/teacher-certification.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certification<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In middle- and high-school STEM subjects, you will likely need <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not only<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bachelor\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> degree in education <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but also<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a concentration in the STEM subject you <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are hoping<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to teach (such as a major in science).<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> So why should you consider a STEM teacher position?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why Should You Consider A STEM Teacher Position?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are many reasons to become a STEM teacher. For <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">starters<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> STEM allows you to combine your passion for teaching with your love for a particular field. STEM teachers get to drive innovation through the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ever-important science, technology, engineering, and math subjects. They stretch the boundaries of traditional teaching methods through data-driven learning approaches encompassing technology and teaching collaboration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>STEM classes are often hands-on, engaging, and <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ever evolving<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Students become researchers, scientists, programmers, and engineers. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The work that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> STEM teachers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">do<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is the foundation of our <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">students&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> future working worlds, and this work will shape not only their world but the world of the generations to come<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Feeling<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> inspired? How do you become a STEM teacher?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How to Become an STEM Teacher<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you have all the requirements to teach in a STEM setting, <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">then<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> let the job search begin! The need for STEM teachers is ever-rising. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Of all the magnet schools in the U.S, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">there are<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdreducation.com\/how-many-schools-are-in-the-u-s\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">700<\/span><\/a> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> focus specifically on STEM.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not to mention <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> many schools are adapting a STEM curriculum that either the classroom teacher or a specialist teacher <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is delivering<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> How do you go about finding these jobs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Most job search engines allow you to filter for specific interests. This includes looking directly on desirable districts websites and selecting \u201cSTEM\u201d positions. You can also set various job search engines to email you a notification when a job matching your criteria becomes available. Springtime is a popular time to discover openings, but don\u2019t be discouraged if you don\u2019t land a position before summer. There is often movement in education until the very first day of school, and even throughout the year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the past decade, positions in STEM have been rapidly growing. STEM is a necessary component of our <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">students&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> general education so that they can enter the workforce fully equipped to succeed. STEM offers teachers variety, engages students, and enriches their <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">own<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> understanding and perspectives.
