{"id":9147,"date":"2024-05-10T17:13:48","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T22:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/?p=9147"},"modified":"2024-05-13T16:22:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T21:22:55","slug":"the-secrets-of-surviving-the-first-years-of-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/blog\/the-secrets-of-surviving-the-first-years-of-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"The Secrets of Surviving the First Years of Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine it is your first day of school again and your first time\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in your classroom for the year. Hundreds of students everywhere are preparing for the new school year. Anxiety and butterflies hit most, if not all, of them as they are excited for a new beginning in a different grade level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just as the students prepare and are anxious for the new year, their first-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/degree\/?_degree_type=bachelors%2Cmasters%2Ceducation-specialist%2Cdoctorate%2Ccertificate-licensure-endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teacher<\/a> inevitably feels the same\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">way<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. With this\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being said<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, no one can tackle the educational profession alone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It truly takes a village to teach our children<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and no<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0one should\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be expected<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to handle everything that happens on a school day alone.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building Strong Foundations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Building relationships with colleagues is invaluable. The bond\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0created, along with the support that colleagues can provide, is so much more than what a textbook can offer. Colleagues experience the first-day jitters, just as any new teacher would. They also have lived this and survived the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0same situation that any new teacher is experiencing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/2021\/10\/the-benefits-of-vertical-and-horizontal-collaboration-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Collaboration<\/a> and openly talking with your team allow for a supportive foundation to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be built<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Knowing that your team is behind you and there to support you in any way possibly makes each day a little easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Teams are not going to leap out to try to connect with new staff. Instead, all new teachers\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0take a step and be part of their teams. Joining in on conversations or popping in to say good morning before the school day starts shows that you are friendly and want to connect. Being part of meetings and asking to join in on a meeting that you can offer assistance with will show your colleagues that you want to do your best and\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">you want to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0be part of something much bigger than yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lesson Planning and Instruction \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In order to<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0best prepare for the school day, lesson plans can serve as a guide and offer direction for each day of the week. A lesson plan does serve so much more than\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">required<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0documentation that needs to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be turned in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachhub.com\/professional-development\/2021\/05\/how-to-get-started-with-batch-lesson-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesson plans<\/a>\u00a0are in place to be sure that planning occurs. In a broader sense, think of lessons in this way. No one would arrive to give a speech without planning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0applies to your classroom instruction as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>With this same mindset, think of how much more prepared you are in front of your classroom if you have a layout of what direction you will take your students through for the entire week. Without planning, there is weaker instruction with a big picture not in mind. Planning out the whole week keeps educators on the right track to get all that needs to be accomplished by the end of the week.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Planning enhances instruction.\u00a0When planning ahead, it is important to collaborate with colleagues and\u00a0be sure\u00a0that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachhub.com\/professional-development\/2015\/03\/how-to-create-a-curriculum-map\/\">curriculum map<\/a> that your district uses is being followed. We can plan out a great lesson, and it may be your best ever, but if it doesn\u2019t align\u00a0to\u00a0the standards, a huge chunk of time has been wasted.\u00a0Educators can get creative and follow the standards at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Self-Care and Resilience<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Each day\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0we step into our classrooms, we want to be sure that we\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are giving<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0our students our very best.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teachers\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0expected<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to devote\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">all<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0their time to their classrooms, but at the same time, anyone with experience will tell you that becoming an effective teacher takes planning\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0your own time outside of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the\u00a0amount of\u00a0time that goes into your educational career, all teachers must take time for themselves. Self-care must become a priority to avoid fatigue and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateprogram.org\/2022\/03\/how-educational-leadership-skills-can-address-teacher-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teacher burnout<\/a> and ensure time\u00a0for you\u00a0to do things that make you feel refreshed and energized. There are several ways to practice self-care.\u00a0Exercising can\u00a0truly\u00a0benefit you in several ways, especially if you are working out with a friend.\u00a0Even if you exercise alone, this is a time to clear your mind and do something healthy for yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Enjoying an evening out with friends or family may be\u00a0exactly\u00a0what is needed. Other things exist outside of your classroom, and it is\u00a0important\u00a0to recognize just how much your friends miss you or your family needs you. If you resign from your job today, someone will replace you tomorrow. Being a teacher is extremely important, but remember that your family is forever, and you must prioritize your time to be sure you are giving yourself the mental break you need and deserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At times, when things are challenging and you need help with getting through difficult times, therapy may be something that offers comfort and support. It is\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">important<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to take care of not only your physical health but also your mental and emotional health. Employers also\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">offer<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0an employee assistance program that can help you find counseling services that can assist as well.\u00a0 You can always do this privately and seek help on your own, but it is worth noting that every district has an EAP that\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">if<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0offered to educators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As educators, we should strive to thrive rather than\u00a0just\u00a0survive.\u00a0By reaching out and utilizing resources at our fingertips, we can emerge from a problem and come out on top.\u00a0As challenging as times may seem, a resilient teacher will reflect and grow to overcome any hurdles they may face. Setting boundaries and knowing your limits are part of being resilient. Leaving your laptop at work for a night and giving yourself time to regroup is setting boundaries so that we don\u2019t wholly wear ourselves out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Every day\u00a0we\u00a0want to ensure we bring our\u00a0very\u00a0best to our classrooms.
