Through the curves life can throw you, resilience is necessary in order to succeed and to grow. In this article, we will take a look at what exactly career resilience is. More specifically, why resilience is important for educators and ways to build resilience in the educational field.

What is Career Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to cope in times of high stress or challenges. Resilience can be learned and also can be strengthened. When it comes to career resilience, the same definition is true but goes a little deeper. It is the ability to take charge of your career path as you continuously develop new skills. It means that you stay up to date on the latest technology developments, the changes in curriculum, and the most recent research on development of a child’s whole self. It also means that when times get hard, you have a strong professional network to lean on.

Why is Resilience Important for Educators?

Working in education is no cake walk. Teachers work everyday to meet the social, emotional, and educational needs of each of their learners, all the while trying to hit benchmark goals and meet educational standards. Curriculum is always changing, and teachers need to be trained in the latest trends and stay up to date on the newest technology. There are parent concerns and complaints to be dealt with and behavior conflicts to sort through, making the pressure teachers feel relentless and tiresome. That is why it is so important for educators to develop a strong resilience. Having a strong resilience will keep our love for educating youth at the forefront of our minds and not get buried under the weight of all we bear on a daily basis. Below are some tips and ways to help educators build the resilience they need to not forget why they entered the educational field in the first place.

Ways to Build Resilience

Lifelong Learner

In order to build resilience in the educational career field, there are some things that can be done. First, becoming a lifelong learner will help keep teachers on top of the current research and new trends. By continuing to learn and grow as an educator, teachers will stay excited about new ideas they learn that can be brought into the classroom. Think about how it feels as an adult to learn a cool new piece of technology or read an enjoyable piece of literature. Then getting to implement those learners into the classroom brings that excitement to the learners as well. The bonus? When kids are enjoying what and how they are learning, oftentimes behaviors stay minimum and relationships grow stronger. This becomes a win-win for everyone involved.

Strong Professional Network

Another way to build resilience in your career is by fostering a strong professional network. Just as we have those particular friends we call on when we need someone to listen to us, that person we reach out to when we need advice, or the friend we always lean on when we need a pep talk, your professional network should include a variety of people with different talents and traits too. It also helps to have a large professional network when it comes time to make a job change. The more people you know, the more opportunities will be opened for you, and the more you can grow as an educator.

Career Goals

Building resilience in the workplace can also mean keeping your eyes set on your career goals and not losing sight of where you want to be. Maybe this means taking a job that you don’t prefer at a new location, because you know it will lead you more quickly into the position you ultimately want to be in. Maybe it’s on a much smaller scale than that, such as getting through a tough unit by finding ways to make the material more exciting. No matter how big or small, distant or immediate they are, goals are important to keep us focused on the tasks at hand.

Fostering Self-Worth

A final way to help build resilience is by fostering a strong self-worth. By having a clear sense of one’s own value as a person will help difficult times seem more manageable. Developing this self worth can take some practice. Try writing a few sentences down on a piece of paper that is visible to you everyday. Or keep a journal of positive things that happened or ways you contributed to the day. Doing this will make the harder days seem less harsh and help you remember what it is you are good at.

Resilience is a necessary ingredient in every career field. It keeps us remembering why it was we went into that profession and helps us pick ourselves up when times are hard. By becoming a lifelong learner, fostering a professional network, setting clear goals, and developing a strong self worth, resiliency will be in place for the next time you need it.

Has there ever been a year tougher than this past pandemic one where resilience was as necessary of an ingredient as this year?
